The school year has come to a close. Our graduating class of 2018 is moving on to new opportunities and adventures and we wish them all the best in their post-Dover Bay learning. For the rest of us, the summer break allows us to reflect on the year, enjoy our ‘non-school’ life with family and friends, and prepare for the 2018-2019 school year.

This short blog provides a quick review of our Learning Leaders journey this year, and some encouragement to both enjoy the summer and to prepare for next year.

We are very fortunate at Dover Bay to have so many of our staff take on leadership roles, both formally and informally. Their passion, energy, and effort, help make Dover Bay an amazing place to work and learn. One of our formal leadership groups is our Learning Leaders. They meet once a month after school to help create a positive vision for our future, establish a plan to get us there, and then do the work to make it happen. Connected to every aspect of our school, our Learning Leaders are the spokes of our wheel as we navigate the educational road ahead.

The two links below show part of their journey this year. The first link is to the power point slides from their “Ignite” session and the second link is to a video of their presentation to the other secondary school Learning Leader teams. I encourage you to click through the slides first, then watch the video as our leaders explain their journey. The Dover Bay section of the video is only 5 minutes long.

The 2017-2018 school year was the first year for the Learning Leaders model. We are very excited for the opportunities that next year will provide for this dynamic team to drive our school forward.

I hope each of you has a wonderful summer break, one filled with outdoor adventures and thoughtful connections with family and friends. I encourage each of you to take on a learning challenge, immerse yourself in learning about something new, or deepen your understanding of an ongoing interest.

I am also hopeful that you will put down the phone for awhile and take some time to connect with things beyond the screen. Reflect on this past year of learning and set some goals for next year. For those who had a fabulous year, think back on how you made it all happen, the supports you had in place, and the effort and determination you showed to ensure success. For those who may be a little disappointed with how the year went, reflect back on the decisions you made, the challenges that stumped you, and the supports that were missing. Once you have an idea of how things got away on you, you’ll be able to identify the changes that need to be made for next year, both personally, and for the supports and assistance that we at the school need to provide.

Wishing everyone a fabulous summer break and looking forward to hearing about your adventures when I see you in September.
