Hul’q’umi’num word of the week:

tun i’ c̓un ut̓l [tuh-neat-sin-ut], it means “I am from.”

May 5 is Red Dress Day, May 5 is Red Dress Day, a day to honor and remember thousands of Indigenous people murdered or missing due to a legacy of colonial violence and genocide. Did you know that Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered than non-Indigenous? These homicides are less likely to be solved by police, and when charges are laid, first-degree murder charges are less likely than in non-Indigenous cases. Monitoring Canada’s institutions to ensure they are accountable and uphold the dignity and inherent value of all people is answering a call for justice. To learn more about the Calls for Justice, please refer to the final report of the National Inquiry into Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls of Canada.
